    Hello Verge team,

    think i need a blender tutorial.
    I’m struggling with a CAD model that has too many vertices. (approximately 1.000.000 points)
    a large part of the geometry is invisible inside the model
    is there a tool to free the mesh from it?
    I tried blender tools like “clean up mesh”
    but i think it would be best to delete all the geometry inside the model

    ideas and experiences are welcome

    You can try a Decimate tool or some addons from bmarket like this or another software like this but I think the best result will be achieved with the retopology by your hands. You can use RetopoFlow to ease it. You can also ask to send a cad model and tesseleate it by yourself usign Rhino, it has a good tesselator that will help you to get a good result.

    @alfred, Mikhail is correct with regards to retopology. You will achieve the best results with retopo, but I realize that sometimes you just want to clean up a CAD model in Blender.

    All CAD models are different, but if your imported CAD model has surfaces demarcated with sharp edges in Blender, you are in luck. Blender renders sharp edges in light blue in Blender. You can use sharp edges as boundaries on surface selection. I suggest that you select all of the surfaces that you wish to keep using “select linked” with the “sharp” option. Invert the selection (ctrl-i) and deleted the unwanted faces.

    I made a quick recording of this technique in action. In the video, I want to keep the outside of the molded box. I want to delete all of the interior features. This took the number of vertices from 29,000 to 488 in a few seconds.

    Maybe this technique could work for your model?

    thank you very much for your video, but i think i’m out of luck
    surfaces are not demarcated with sharp edges.
    Is it because i exported a .stp file in “freeCAD” to .stl?
    I have no idea.

    retopology and RetopoFlow are on my to do list.
    i will also test Rhino in exporting stp to stl.

    @alfred, stp files do not support edge sharpness. OBJ and FBX files do, but I don’t think that FreeCAD supports sharp edge export.

    It is often easier to clean up your geometry in CAD before you export it to Blender. Objects are usually separate parts or bodies in CAD. Those parts can be easily deleted or suppressed prior to exporting the assembly. The ability to do this will depend on how the original stp file was created. You should try this in FreeCAD.

    I am not sure what tools in the free software world will do a good job of converting a STP to OBJ (or equivalent file formats). In the paid software world, Autodesk 3DS Max and Fusion 360 both do an excellent job of file conversion. I do not know your employment situation, but Autodesk does offer Fusion 360 for free for personal use and for students (please read the terms and conditions). In full disclosure, I used to work for Autodesk.

    Hello Jem,
    i have to survive with free software.. :)

    Now i tried to export the CAD file with FreeCAD to OBJ.
    it seems that now almost every edge is maked as sharp?

    The Decimate Modifier in Blender, does a good job, but of course i lose geometry.

    I want to test “Fusion 360” on this matter whether it brings better results.

    Yes, FreeCAD has less options on convertion from solid objects or nurbs surfaces to mesh. I usually used Autodesk Alias Surface for that, but later found Rhino more tweakable. You can try to do it with Fusion or 3ds Max. Blende best for cleaning already exported mesh on my opinion.

    Maybe;), but it’s a very specific task. We are prepearing a series of new basic tutorials, so I hope some day may be we have a free time for that.
