Shape keys are great but relative shape keys are limiting. Any chance we can get non relative shape keys?
Relative keys that support changing the “Relative To” would also solve the same problem.

Unfortunately, only the mode provided by default can be considered as “classic morhing”, i.e. it can be rendered in realtime engine in the most optimal way. Other modes will require not only refactoring of vertex shaders, but need more data provided to the shader and such will be less efficient2024-02-07 at 5:44 pm #70210visualizerCustomerYeah! it would be a one more next level feature. Hope in future sometimes we get it

Puzzles and JS coding. Fast and expensive.

The problem is that is it can be excessively difficult depending and worse time consuming on the number of keys you have and the order and timing of the shape shifts. The current method requires you to key frame not only the shapekey that you want to shift but it requires you to key others shape keys as well, if not all the other shape key values to 0 if you need a specific order.
With relative shape keys you have you can sequence all your shape keys in order regardless of the number of shape keys and use only two key frames to animate the entire sequence.
Here is a project file with a blend file that has the two cubes morphing one using relative and one with relative turned off. https://v3d.net/st0
The problem is not really apparent when you only have a handful of shape key targets but it compounds quickly when you have close to 100 or more. Its just a time consuming waste of time.
On the other hand the if you have a circular shape or a shape that overhangs another and you want to key between them without it appearing a linear mess…you it would be great if we could just set the Basis of each keyframe then we wouldn’t need non-relative.
But for now..we are stuck with a ton of keyframes and a ton of time to get it done.
If you have another solution….let me know.
