    Anyway to get custom distance with the “zoom camera to” puzzle?
    in a situation it is a bit too far from the objects

    you may use locators/dummies instead, and use the “tween camera” puzzle, it takes away the guessing work… I use 2 locators for each camera position, one for the camera and another for the aim

    If blender you can use empties for achieving the camera location & camera look at target.
    This works good. Same as mentioned by Muhammed.
